Woman With Admirer

At its deepest level, this work grows from the artist’s fascination with interior worlds- the private rituals, quiet longings, and unspoken emotional currents that shape a life behind closed doors. It is motivated by the desire to preserve a kind of gentleness rarely seen today: the slow romance, the hush of admiration, the nostalgia of a room that holds its memories like light held in glass.
Woman With Admirer is a deeply nostalgic and emotionally resonant stained- glass work, built at an architectural scale. It evokes the atmosphere of an elegant Indian bungalow- a world of warm lamps, curved walls, patterned floors and quiet, lived- in beauty.
At its centre, a woman sits serenely in a salwar kameez, her shoulders wrapped in a soft dupatta. Her bosom and jewellery have been rendered with particular care: the neckline is framed by facets of glass that feel like luminous fabric, and her necklace sits like a mosaic of light above her chest. Her face- one of the most challenging elements to create in stained glass- has been sculpted through subtle tonal shifts, giving her a presence both gentle and commanding.
Behind her hangs what first appears to be a window. It is, in fact, a painting- within- a- painting: an admirer watching her from a separate realm. Its placement and perspective mimic a window frame, creating a double- reality where the viewer becomes aware of both the room and the observer. The admirer holds a rose- a small but significant symbol of old- world wooing, secrecy in affection, and the quiet formality with which admiration was once expressed. Fine lines extend from his eyes toward her, signalling the direction of his gaze- a silent, intentional narrative device. One of the artist’s signatures is integrated into this portrait; another signature appears above the bird in the right panel, embedded into the year 2023.
Around the woman, the scene unfolds with layers of old- world domestic charm: the black- and- white checkered flooring, the elegant curve of the wall, the potted plant with textured soil, the balcony lattice filtering light onto the flowers outside, the warm glow of twin lamps, the birdbath, and the sparrow- like birds in vibrant, joyful colours.
Every piece of glass is individually selected- no two hues overlap, and no two adjacent flower petals share the same shade- a hallmark of the artist’s precision. The result is a world that glows, shifts, and transforms throughout the day, like memory illuminated.
This is a work about admiration, interiority, femininity, and the layered narratives that unfold in private spaces. Its scale and detail give it the presence of a major architectural artwork- suited for a grand lobby, museum atrium, or the entrance of a distinguished home.
